Mark your diary – the international FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters breaking competition is coming to Cape Town (V&A Waterfront) on 18 January 2025! Instax chatted to the fabulous host/MC of the event, Mel Rock to find out more about her dancing journey.

What does a good MC/host bring to a breaking event? 

A good host brings an exciting energy that keeps the crowd entertained but also keeps the event going and makes sure that the breakers are the highlight of the day or event.

What are you most excited about seeing at the event? 

I’m excited to see the breakers battle it out for that no. 1 spot. Also to see the exchange between the breakers, which is always entertaining. It will be my first time experiencing this event, so I am just excited to experience the event on SA soil!

You dance yourself. Could you share a little bit about your journey? 

So, I am not a breaker but always loved and battled in styles such as popping, all-styles, and a bit of krumping. I have trained in breaking and took classes, and I have a huge respect for breakers – it really takes a lot to do this specific style. 

My dance journey has taken me to Las Vegas where I trained with Popin’ Pete; I travelled to China where I won a dance competition; then trained a bit in South Korea; and competed in Japan. For me, dancing really opened doors to the rest of the world.

Do you think Cape Town is the capital of breaking in SA? 

Yes. The people that originally shared the message were, and still are, from Cape Town. They travelled the country to teach breaking.

What can the crowd expect coming to a breaking event as big as the Undisputed Master?

Massive talent, dope music and of course breakers that will blow our minds with their unique style!
