The international FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters breaking competition is heading to Cape Town (V&A Waterfront) on 18 January 2025! What are the judges looking for in a great breaking set? Instax chatted with Genetics, one of the judges for Undisputed Masters, to find out more.

What must the crowd understand about the Trivium Judging System the judges will be using?

The Trivium Judging System is a comparative judging system and there are no scores. We are comparing the two individuals based on the moment, within the battle.

What are you looking for in a great breaking set?

A performance whereby the dancer brings their own unique style and flavour to the floor.

How important is it for a judge to have danced himself/herself, and do you still hit the floor sometimes?

In my opinion, it is important since through their experience they would understand the history and the foundation of the dance and the music. And I do still break on occasions, but solely for the love of it.

What do you enjoy the most – solo or crew battles?

Solo, definitely. You’re alone with no back-up and you must take the challenge head-on. It’s intense! When it comes to crew battles, I love the variety; each crew member brings their own flavour and together they create harmony.

What are you most hyped about FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters taking place in Cape Town?

It’s my hometown! Overall, Undisputed Masters will be creating a platform for the dancers of Africa to express and showcase themselves on a stage that is recognised worldwide. All eyes will be on Africa!
