Instax interviews Elvina “Vee” Da Silva – Judge at FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters

With the international FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters breaking competition heading to Cape Town (V&A Waterfront) on 18 January 2025, Instax caught up with Elvina “Vee” Da Silva, one of the judges at the event, to find out what she will be looking for from the competitors.

What do you believe makes for a stand-out breaking set?

In a great breaking performance, I look for creativity, technical skill, and a strong connection to the music. Unique style and personal expression are also really important.

How does one become a certified judge in the Trivium Judging System used for Undisputed Masters?

I became a certified judge for the Trivium Judging System through an open international call for those interested in enhancing their judging skills in breaking. The training was pretty intense, starting with the Three Fold System and then diving deep into the Trivium.

This training really emphasised fairness and clarity in judging, and the Trivium framework has been invaluable for quickly spotting imbalances and nuances in performances. It not only improves the judging process but also ensures that every dancer gets a fair evaluation.

For a person who has never attended a breaking event before, what can they expect at FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters?

They can expect an electrifying atmosphere filled with amazing talent, a diverse crowd, and a genuine appreciation for the culture and community around breaking.

What’s the standard of breaking SA and which country do you believe is currently the best?

The standard of breaking in South Africa is quite high. While I think countries like France and the USA lead in talent and recognition due to better resources, the African continent, including South Africa, has deep roots in breaking and a lot of potential.

How important is it to see a big event such as FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters coming to South Africa? 

Having a major event like FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed Masters in South Africa is incredibly important. It showcases local talent and helps elevate the scene, inspiring future generations of breakers.
